By Investing In Hydrogen Energy And Laying Out Photovoltaic Green Electricity, Logistics Companies Seek To Unify Economic And Ecological Benefits.

Apr 22, 2024

Green is the foundation for high-quality development of China's economy. Accelerating the cultivation of new productive forces is inseparable from the green transformation of development methods. Looking around the world, a "green revolution" led by China is underway. Vigorously developing green industries and encouraging the innovative application of green and low-carbon technologies are important ways to promote the green transformation of all walks of life, and will also become a new driving force for the high-quality development of China's economy.

On April 22, ushering in the 55th World Earth Day, Southern Metropolis Daily launched a series of reports on "Discovering New Green Energy". The report will be divided into five chapters, focusing on green innovation practices in the finance, consumption, logistics, Internet, automobile and new energy industries, while also exploring the difficulties and challenges faced by different industries in the process of green transformation.

April 22 is the 55th World Earth Day, with the theme of "Cherishing the Earth and Harmonious Coexistence between Man and Nature". Among all walks of life, the logistics industry is both a major energy consumer and a major carbon emitter, with a direct and extensive impact on the global environment. Carbon emission factors are everywhere in transportation hubs, freight yards, warehouses, transportation networks, packaging, information processing, delivery terminals and other links across the country. These are also the key to energy conservation and emission reduction and the implementation of dual carbon. How to achieve the unification of economic, social and ecological benefits is a long-term issue facing the entire logistics industry.

The "China Green Logistics Development Report (2023)" shows that carbon emissions from my country's logistics industry account for about 9% of the country's total carbon emissions. According to estimates, cargo transportation and distribution activities, loading, unloading, handling and warehousing activities, and auxiliary logistics activities are the largest carbon emissions in the logistics industry. Three major sources of emissions. Not only the operation of vehicles such as cars, ships and airplanes will consume a lot of fuel, but warehousing and logistics transfer centers will also consume a lot of electricity. At present, logistics companies are taking measures to reduce the use of high-energy-consuming energy and increase the proportion of clean energy as the only way to achieve green and low-carbon transportation and promote the sustainable development of the industry.

Accelerate the replacement of high-energy-consuming fuels in trunk line transportation

Trunk and branch line transportation is a key carbon emission link in logistics operations. Optimizing the transportation capacity structure is one of the important measures for the logistics and transportation industry to achieve green, efficient and sustainable development. By introducing clean energy into aviation and land transportation, replacing traditional fuel transportation capacity and expanding the scale of green transportation teams, it has become the mainstream method for many logistics companies to promote energy conservation and emission reduction and practice green and low carbon.

In January this year, JD Logistics announced the large-scale use of dozens of hydrogen energy heavy truck logistics vehicles, becoming the first logistics company in the industry to use hydrogen energy trucks on a large scale. It is reported that these hydrogen energy vehicles put into operation are all 9.6-meter heavy-duty logistics trucks, responsible for medium and long-distance transportation in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. Compared with traditional fuel vehicles, the hydrogen energy logistics vehicles put into large-scale use can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 1,000 tons per year.

Data shows that, unlike traditional oil trucks and trams, hydrogen energy logistics vehicles have strong environmental adaptability and service life characteristics. Even at temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius and as high as 45 degrees Celsius, the vehicles can still operate stably and normally. The duration can be up to 10 years. While reducing carbon emissions, the large-scale use of hydrogen energy vehicles will further help reduce costs.

In 2023, SF Express will put into operation more than 5,000 new new energy vehicles, which will be mainly used in diverse transportation scenarios such as short-distance branch lines, connection and terminal collection and delivery in cities, as well as primary and secondary trunk lines across provinces and cities. As of the end of the reporting period, SF Express had launched more than 31,000 new energy vehicles. In addition, combined with factors such as the maturity of new energy vehicle technology and energy replenishment conditions, pilot operations of LNG natural gas and hydrogen fuel vehicles will be carried out in some areas and lines. In 2023, SF Express will have a total of 11 hydrogen fuel-powered light trucks operating in the Shanghai area and 2 LNG tractors operating in the Beijing area.

Since last year, YTO has successively introduced "bullet heads" that are different from the flat fronts of traditional trucks - new energy heavy-duty trucks, as well as smart-driving heavy-duty trucks to save energy and reduce emissions, in many shipping centers across the country. Nandu reporters learned from YTO that compared with traditional models, each intelligent driving heavy truck can reduce fuel consumption by 2 liters per 100 kilometers, saving 10,000 yuan a year. Based on the annual saving of 6,000 liters of diesel, the carbon dioxide emission reduction can reach 15,780 kilograms. One year of operation of a vehicle is equivalent to recycling more than 400,000 cartons. The emission reduction effect of new energy trucks is even more significant. One year of operation of one vehicle is equivalent to recycling more than 2.5 million cartons.

Compared with land transportation, air transportation is more difficult to save energy and reduce emissions. Currently, some international logistics companies are exploring the use of SAF (a biofuel produced from renewable resources such as vegetable oils, animal fats, waste and crops) to replace traditional jet fuel. For example, in October 2023, DHL Express signed a long-term strategic agreement with World Energy to purchase approximately 668 million liters of sustainable aviation fuel through Sustainable Aviation Fuel Certificates (SAFc). Previously, the company launched the GoGreen Plus service, which aims to support corporate customers to reduce carbon emissions in a "carbon embedded" way by using sustainable aviation fuel.

"The air transport industry is a carbon-intensive industry, and emission reduction is very difficult and challenging. From the current technology and implementation path, sustainable aviation fuel is the most economical choice." Wu Dongming, CEO of DHL Express China, previously accepted Narada In an exclusive interview, the reporter mentioned that from the perspective of the entire life cycle, sustainable aviation fuel can reduce emissions by about 80% compared with traditional fuel. However, at present, sustainable aviation fuel still faces challenges in terms of supply, demand and economy, and more companies across the entire chain need to enter the industry.

For DB Schenker, a logistics company under the Deutsche Bahn Group, clean logistics is one of the company's three ESG strategic priorities. Xie Weining, vice president of DB Schenker Greater China and general manager of contract logistics, told Nandu reporters that in the air transport sector, the "carbon neutral flights" launched by DB Schenker in cooperation with Lufthansa use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The combustion of fuel derived from biowaste produces carbon dioxide equivalent to the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed from the atmosphere when plants first grow, ensuring the flight achieves 100% net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, in the land transportation sector, DB Schenker has gradually adopted new energy vehicles, such as electric trucks and hybrid trucks, to replace traditional fuel vehicles, greatly reducing carbon emissions during transportation.

Photovoltaic power generation becomes the starting point for energy conservation and carbon reduction in logistics parks

As the core unit where various logistics businesses gather, the logistics park integrates a variety of logistics transportation methods, warehousing activities and transfer operation facilities. It is the core of carbon neutrality in the logistics industry. Nandu reporters found that in recent years, more and more logistics companies have continued to increase the proportion of clean energy use in the park, actively laid out renewable energy power generation plans, and promoted the construction progress of photovoltaic projects in industrial parks. At the same time, with higher power generation efficiency, lower electricity costs and more diversified benefits, logistics parks have become the best application scenario for building distributed photovoltaic power generation.

On the roof of YTO Shanghai Container Center, 1,194 dark blue solar photovoltaic panels are laid. It is understood that the photovoltaic power station was connected to the grid in September 2023 and has generated more than 100,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity in more than 2 months. It can reduce 836 tons of carbon dioxide emissions throughout the year, which is equivalent to planting 84,000 trees on the roof of Shanghai Center. It is understood that in 2023, YTO's container shipping centers in Jieyang, Hangzhou, Shanghai and other places in Guangdong will successively put into use photovoltaic power generation projects, with a paved area of more than 40,000 square meters.

JD Logistics has built the "Asia No. 1" Intelligent Industrial Park in Xi'an Port District into my country's first "carbon neutral" industrial park. It is reported that the roof of the park is equipped with photovoltaic power generation equipment, with a total installed capacity of 9 MW. The photovoltaic roof totaling 100,000 square meters occupies more than one-third of the total area of the park. The green electricity generated can be used for office work in the park during the day. For lighting use, electric new energy vehicles can be charged at night through the pilot project of "car + carport + charging pile + photovoltaic". According to statistics, the industrial park's annual distributed photovoltaic module power generation was 9.857 million kilowatt-hours, which can save nearly 1,210 tons of standard coal compared with thermal power generation. According to the carbon trading methodology, it can produce CCER carbon emission reductions of approximately 4,343.98 tons.

SF Express's 2023 social responsibility report shows that as of the end of 2023, SF Express has successfully promoted the construction of 26 industrial park photovoltaic projects, of which 14 industrial park photovoltaic projects have been put into operation, with a cumulative installed capacity of 64 MW and an annual clean energy power generation of 1839 Thousands of kilowatt-hours. According to the report, the company promotes the green operation of the industrial park from various aspects such as planning and design, warehouse construction, and operation management. By laying out rooftop photovoltaics, introducing smart water and electricity management, optimizing warehouse space layout and other methods, we will comprehensively improve the efficiency and energy-saving benefits of the transfer link and reduce the impact of the transfer link on the environment. SF Express expects to fully complete the construction of the photovoltaic project in the industrial park and put it into operation by the end of 2025.

Liu Guanghai, deputy secretary-general of the Guangdong Provincial Society of Logistics and Supply Chain and deputy dean of the School of Management of Guangzhou University, told Nandu reporters that energy is the area where logistics companies have the largest costs during operation. Compared with some low-carbon solutions, the cost of implementation in the short term is relatively high, and it is difficult to promote. Photovoltaics is a breakthrough that combines economic benefits and social benefits. It can not only reduce the cost of enterprises, but also play a very good role. Low carbon demonstration role.

"In terms of practicing social responsibility and green and low-carbon, the problem that logistics companies need to face at this stage is more about how to balance and unify economic benefits and social responsibility, especially when the industry is still in the midst of competition, how to both It can reduce costs and increase efficiency to gain profits, while also reducing the impact on the environment." Liu Guanghai pointed out to Nandu reporters that large companies often have more systematic research and strategies on dual carbon, while small and medium-sized enterprises are currently more "watching as they go." The promotion of the overall dual-carbon strategy in the logistics industry relies on the combination of three parties: government guidance, public awareness and education, and enterprise practice. It is a long-term process.
