During Charging:
- Discharge State: When a power battery is fully discharged, it means it has delivered all its stored energy to an external load, and the chemical reactions that produce electricity have come to an almost complete halt.
- Charging Process: When an external charging voltage is applied to the battery, the electrochemical reactions start to reverse. At the positive electrode, lithium ions (in the case of lithium-ion batteries) move from the positive electrode to the negative electrode through the electrolyte and separator. Simultaneously, electrons flow through the external circuit from the positive electrode to the negative electrode.
- Electrochemical Reactions: At the positive electrode, lithium ions combine with the host material, typically a metal oxide, releasing energy in the form of electrons. At the negative electrode, lithium ions are stored within the host material, usually graphite.
- Electrolyte Role: The electrolyte in the battery facilitates the movement of lithium ions between the positive and negative electrodes, allowing the battery to charge effectively.
During Discharging:
- Charge State: When the battery is fully charged, it means that the electrochemical reactions have reached equilibrium, and the battery is ready to supply electrical energy.
- Discharging Process: When the battery is connected to an external load, the reverse process occurs. The stored lithium ions start moving from the negative electrode back to the positive electrode through the electrolyte and separator.
- Electricity Generation: As the lithium ions move from the negative to the positive electrode, electrons flow through the external circuit, creating an electrical current that powers the connected device or system.
- Repeated Cycles: The charging and discharging process can be repeated multiple times until the battery's capacity diminishes significantly, and it requires recharging.
