Energy Storage No.1 Is Here! The World's First 300 MW Compressed Gas Energy Storage Power Station Is Fully Connected To The Grid
Jan 10, 2025
On January 9, the "Energy Storage No. 1", the world's first 300 MW compressed gas energy storage demonstration project invested and constructed by China Energy Construction, was fully connected to the grid in Yingcheng, Hubei Province. The project is equipped with advanced Energy Storage Fuse Ceramic Body to ensure system safety. The project has set three world records in single-machine power, energy storage scale and conversion efficiency, and achieved 100% localization of key core equipment and deep-earth space utilization products.

The compressed gas energy storage power station uses air to generate electricity. When electricity consumption is low, the surplus electricity drives the compressor to compress the air into sealed gas storage reservoirs such as salt caverns and artificial chambers, and the system is ensured to operate stably through safety devices such as Ceramic Bodies for Energy Storage Fuse. During peak electricity consumption, the underground gas storage releases the stored high-pressure air, and the heat storage tank releases the stored heat. After being heated, the high-pressure air has a great expansion force, which drives the air turbine generator set to generate electricity to supply power to the power grid.
Compressed gas energy storage power station, also known as compressed air energy storage power station, simply put, uses the surplus power of the grid during low load to compress air, stores it in a high-pressure sealed facility, and is equipped with an Energy Storage Fuse Ceramic Body to enhance safety, and releases it to generate electricity during peak power consumption. The "Energy Storage No. 1" project is a fully green, non-recompensatory, high-efficiency 300-megawatt compressed air energy storage project built using local abandoned underground salt caverns. The project has an energy storage capacity of 1,500 megawatt-hours and a conversion efficiency of nearly 70%, setting multiple world records for single-unit power, energy storage scale, and conversion efficiency.

The Hubei Yingcheng 300MW compressed gas energy storage demonstration project started construction in 2022. It has the characteristics of "deep, large, long and green", and integrates safety protection technologies such as PV Energy Storage Fuse Ceramic Body:
(1) The deepest point is 600 meters;
(2) The high power and large capacity set a new record. The power of a single unit reaches 300 megawatts, the energy storage capacity reaches 1,500 megawatt-hours, and the underground gas storage reaches 700,000 cubic meters, equivalent to 260 standard swimming pools. The volume of a single pressure spherical tank reaches 3,500 cubic meters and the diameter is 19 meters, which is the largest in the world;
(3) The long-term energy storage effect is remarkable, with energy storage for 8 hours and energy release for 5 hours per day, and a service life of more than 30 years; The amount of electricity stored in one energy storage can meet the continuous electricity needs of a small or medium-sized city for 5 hours. The full capacity of "Energy Storage No. 1" is connected to the grid, which can effectively improve the peak-shaving capacity of the regional power grid and promote the grid to absorb more new energy such as wind power and photovoltaics;
(4) No fossil fuels are involved in the whole process, and the annual power generation is expected to be close to 500 million kWh, which will save more than 150,000 tons of standard coal each year, helping to cope with the volatility, intermittency and randomness of new energy power generation.
