Five Major Processes Of Hot Stamping Forming

Jul 21, 2023

Hot stamping is a metal forming process mainly used for producing high-strength and lightweight components, mainly used in the automotive industry. The main advantage of hot stamping is that it can produce complex-shaped parts with improved mechanical properties. The five main processes involved in hot stamping are as follows:

  • Heating: The first step in hot stamping is heating the sheet metal blanks, typically made from boron steel or other high-strength alloys, to a high temperature (usually above the austenitizing temperature) in a furnace. This makes the material easier to deform and enhances its ductility.
  • Press Forming: Once the blanks reach the desired temperature, they are quickly transferred to a hydraulic press equipped with special dies. The press forms the heated blanks into the desired shape. This step must be performed rapidly to maintain the material's elevated temperature and improve its formability.
  • Quenching (Cooling): Immediately after forming the component in the press, the hot-stamped part is rapidly cooled in a water-cooled die. This process is known as quenching or cooling. The rapid cooling rate allows the material to transform into martensite, a hard and strong phase, thereby obtaining high strength and hardness.
  • Tempering: After quenching, the part is reheated in the same die to a temperature below the austenitizing temperature but above the martensite start temperature. This step, known as tempering or die cooling, allows the material to achieve the desired combination of strength and ductility by transforming some of the martensites into tempered martensite.
  • Trimming and Coating: Finally, excess material is trimmed off, and any necessary holes or features are added to the hot-stamped part. In some cases, the component may be coated or surface-treated for corrosion protection or additional functionalities.

It's essential to note that the hot stamping process is complex and requires precise control of temperature, heating rate, cooling rate, and other variables to produce high-quality components.
