The First Half Of 2023: China Will Reshape The Global Hydrogen Energy Market

Aug 16, 2023

In the first half of 2023, the global hydrogen energy industry will continue to develop, and the Chinese market is approaching number one in the world. Data show that after 2020, South Korea's fuel cell vehicle sales accounted for 50% of the world, but this year began to reverse.

In the first half of 2023, the sales volume of fuel cell vehicles in China will reach 2,410, a year-on-year increase of 73.5%. The size gap has narrowed to less than 800 vehicles, which means that China is rapidly moving toward the world's largest fuel cell vehicle market.

At the same time, China is expected to become the world's largest importer of clean hydrogen. By 2030, it will need to import 13 million tons of hydrogen per year. During the period 2050 to 2060, China will continue to rely heavily on clean hydrogen imports. In 2050, China's clean hydrogen market will reach US$265 billion per year. By 2060, China plans to become carbon neutral, at which point it will be almost self-sufficient.

Secondly, the number of hydrogen refueling stations in China is steadily increasing, and many gas stations have also begun to deploy a hydrogen refueling business. The domestic "hydrogen energy corridor" has begun to take shape. Over 350 hydrogen refueling stations have been built nationwide, accounting for about 40% of the global total, ranking first in the world.

At present, China has made much progress in the field of hydrogen energy:

1. At present, China's annual hydrogen production is about 33 million tons, of which about 12 million tons meet the industrial hydrogen quality standard. It is the world's largest hydrogen production country and has great potential in hydrogen energy supply;

2. China has initially mastered the main technologies and production processes of hydrogen energy preparation, storage and transportation, hydrogenation, fuel cells, and system integration, and has made breakthroughs in long-distance hydrogen transmission technology;

3. China has achieved small-scale demonstration and application of fuel cell vehicles in some regions and has become one of the internationally recognized countries most likely to take the lead in realizing the industrialization of hydrogen fuel cells and hydrogen energy vehicles. The number of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles reached 14,979, ranking third in the world.

4. By the end of 2022, China will have built 310 hydrogen refueling stations, ranking first in the world.

5. The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area have gathered more than 300 industrial enterprises above the designated size in the entire industrial chain.

Although hydrogen energy is still like a "little brother" compared with coal and natural gas, some experts predict that hydrogen energy is on the verge of an explosion and will be on the next trillion or even ten trillion level track.
