Westinghouse signs deal in Bulgaria to promote energy security
CRANBERRY TOWN, Pa., May 7, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Westinghouse Electric Company and Bulgarian state-owned energy company, Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH) -- signed a memorandum of understanding to develop operations in Bulgaria Long-term energy storage (LDES) business. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Bulgarian Energy Minister Alexander Nikolov.
Under the agreement, two heat pump energy storage (PTES) units will be installed to provide 2 GWh of sustainable energy storage. The addition of this important facility will not only improve the resiliency of the grid, it will also provide the economic means to support and stabilize the country's renewable energy generation and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 700,000 tons per year. The technology was developed by Westinghouse member companies.
Ivan Andreev, CEO of Bulgarian Energy Holding, said: "The carbon neutrality targets set by the European Green Deal pose a serious challenge to the sustainable and competitive development of the energy sector. Based on multiple energy sources such as wind and solar ), the reliability and economics of which may depend on long-term storage capacity for large quantities of low-cost energy sources. Large-scale deployment of long-term energy storage (LDES), and the benefits of this technology, can greatly reduce the The total cost of a future system of clean energy from renewable energy sources. Bulgarian Energy Holding and Westinghouse are reliable partners that will drive technological innovation and sustainable development of the energy industry both in the country and in the region."
Elias Gedeon, Westinghouse Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations, said: "Partnering with BEH, Bulgaria's largest state-owned company and energy market leader, marks an important step in our ability to provide countries with enhanced energy security solutions. We are working towards Provide advanced, long-duration, grid-scale energy storage technology as a safe and reliable energy source. Together, we will use efficient and cost-competitive energy storage technology to achieve net energy storage in Europe and Bulgaria carbon targets."
Westinghouse has developed novel sustainable and scalable thermal storage technology and has partnered with Echogen Energy Systems to meet market demand for long-duration energy storage. Westinghouse's heat pump energy storage units provide 10 hours or more of reliable energy storage, addressing many of the challenges that arise in other long-duration energy storage applications, providing greater flexibility and best-in-class cost control to Coping with fluctuations in electricity supply and demand. The solution has a design life of more than 50 years, uses a large number of low-cost materials, and has many advantages over common energy storage technologies for solar battery enclosure cabinets.
