CATL May Go To The United States To Build A Factory To Power BMW/Ford
May 07, 2022
A few days ago, according to Reuters, CATL's evaluation of building a power battery factory in the United States has entered the final stage. The candidate sites include Kentucky and South Carolina in the United States. The new factory may be for BMW and Ford electric vehicles. Supply power batteries, and the mass production time is expected to be around 2026.

Previously, it was reported that CATL plans to build a power battery factory in the United States, with a total investment of up to 5 billion US dollars (about 31.8 billion yuan), a target annual production capacity of about 80 GWh, and a scale of 10,000 employees. Meanwhile, sources said that as far as the potential South Carolina plant is concerned, the goal is to start battery production in 2026. BMW is already a customer of CATL. Other CATL customers include Tesla and Volkswagen.
On May 5, Zeng Yuqun, chairman of CATL, said at the 2021 annual performance briefing that due to localized production needs, CATL is discussing with all mainstream overseas car companies how to implement services. Zeng Yuqun responded to the rumor of building a factory in North America: "The company has discussed various possible supply and cooperation plans with American customers, as well as the possibility of localized production, but the specific situation needs to take into account factors such as worker training, efficiency, and labor unions. Impact on quality and cost.
If
CATL can build a factory in the United States; it will be a key step in its own globalization process. In September 2019, CATL announced that it would invest 1.8 billion euros to build its first overseas factory in Thuringia, Germany. In April this year, the plant in Thuringia, Germany, officially obtained the 8GWh battery cell production license. It is expected to reach the planned production capacity of 14GWh after the end of this year.
In addition to CATL, there are several other Asian companies planning to build factories in the United States, including South Korea's LG New Energy, SK Innovation, and Samsung SDI, according to Reuters. According to reports, Japan's Panasonic is also looking for ways to buy land to build a factory to serve Tesla. In the face of fierce competition from peers, Zeng Yuqun said that at the request of overseas customers, the company will strive to increase the proportion of supply and become its main supplier starting from the next fixed-point cycle, that is, after 2026 or even 2035.
With the rapid expansion of global power battery manufacturing and the continuous growth of electric vehicle production, the demand for high-quality battery structural components is also increasing. Among these components, the aluminum alloy battery housing plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety, structural strength, and thermal management performance of lithium battery packs used in new energy vehicles.
