Fundeen And RP Global Raise Funds To Build A 400MW Photovoltaic Project in Spain

May 26, 2022

On Monday, Spanish crowdfunding platform Fundeen offered Spanish residents a unique opportunity to invest directly in a large‑scale renewable energy project - a 400‑megawatt solar photovoltaic (PV) plant currently under development by Austrian renewable energy developer RP Global in the Murcia region of southeastern Spain. This initiative represents one of the latest efforts to channel community capital into green infrastructure projects at a time when decentralized energy generation is gaining traction across Europe.

Under the terms of this crowdfunding campaign, Fundeen and RP Global are seeking to raise 450,000 euros (approximately USD481,760) to help independent power producers (IPPs) cover part of the development and construction costs of the Carril solar power plant. The funds raised will be used toward critical pre‑construction activities, including permitting, initial engineering, procurement of long‑lead items, and ensuring the project remains on schedule as it moves through its development phase.

The fundraising campaign was first opened exclusively to residents living near the project site to strengthen local participation in the region's energy transition. According to Fundeen, as of Monday, this opportunity has been expanded so that individuals from other parts of Spain can also participate in the investment. This broader eligibility reflects strong early interest and a strategic effort to democratize investment opportunities in Spain's renewable energy sector.

Investors have until May30 to participate in the campaign. As of Tuesday morning, Fundeen's website reported that the Carril project had already raised nearly 139,000 euros, signaling robust engagement from the public. Notably, Fundeen itself contributed 5,000 euros to the campaign, demonstrating its confidence in the project and commitment to enabling community‑driven funding of renewable assets.

Contributions from citizens will be structured as loans, with an attractive annual rate of return between 5% and 6%. Interest on these loans will accrue every six months from the date the funds are disbursed, offering investors a predictable return profile over the investment period. To provide additional security to contributors, RP Global has agreed to serve as the guarantor of the loan, mitigating some of the financial risks typically associated with early-stage project funding.

However, Fundeen has clarified that because the Carril solar project is still in the development phase, there remains a possibility that the project promoters may be unable to secure all required permits. In such a scenario, they may be obliged to repay the loans early or adjust the terms of the investment accordingly, underscoring the importance of understanding development risk when participating in project financing at this stage.

This type of community‑linked investment opportunity aligns with broader trends in the energy sector, where decentralized renewable generation and storage solutions are becoming integral to energy strategies across Europe. In particular, regions actively deploying photovoltaic generation are also seeing increased demand for infrastructure that supports grid integration and energy reliability.
