According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Fatih Birol, the clean energy transition has proven its resilience amidst various obstacles such as the pandemic, energy crises, and geopolitical instability. Remarkably, despite increased energy demand in 2023, emissions have been reined in, showcasing the effectiveness of the transition towards cleaner and more secure energy systems.
Notable progress has been observed in the European Union, where clean energy growth contributed significantly to a nearly 9% decrease in emissions from energy production. Wind power has surpassed both natural gas and coal in energy generation for the first time ever, while the use of coal and natural gas for electricity generation has notably declined.
The IEA attributes this positive shift to factors such as the recovery of hydropower from droughts in 2022 and a partial rebound in nuclear power. These developments highlight the significant role of clean energy technologies in driving down carbon emissions and advancing towards a more sustainable energy future.

Extreme weather events, amplified by phenomena like El Niño, have significantly disrupted energy output from clean sources, as per the latest IEA report. The unprecedented drought of 2022 dealt a severe blow to hydropower, driving a substantial drop in output. This shortfall forced a heavy reliance on fossil fuels, which accounted for nearly 40% of the year's carbon emissions surge.
India and China bore the brunt of this hydropower decline, experiencing a 5.2% spike in fossil fuel emissions in China alone. Despite strides in solar, wind, and electric vehicles, their growth couldn't meet surging energy demands.
India, grappling with a weakened monsoon, faced intensified electricity needs and reduced hydropower generation, driving a significant portion of the country's emission uptick.

Despite strides forward, there are still hurdles to overcome in the quest to reduce global emissions.
Clean energy growth is predominantly seen in advanced economies and China, where they account for the lion's share of new solar and wind installations, as well as electric vehicle sales. However, this leaves many regions heavily reliant on fossil fuels for their energy needs.
Furthermore, not all clean energy technologies saw the same level of progress, as seen in the slight decline in heat pump sales due to affordability issues faced by consumers.
While the commitments made at COP28 in Dubai provide a roadmap for emissions reduction, greater efforts are needed to support emerging and developing economies in their transition to clean energy. This inclusivity is vital for propelling the world towards a sustainable and low-carbon future.
