The World's Largest Compressed Air Energy Storage Power Station Has Started Construction

Dec 20, 2024

On December 18, the world's largest compressed air energy storage power station, Huaneng Jintan Salt Cavern Compressed Air Energy Storage Power Generation Phase II Project, which was participated in by Shandong Electric Power Construction Company No. 1, held a groundbreaking ceremony in Changzhou, Jiangsu, marking the official start of the project.

The Huaneng Jintan Salt Cavern Compressed Air Energy Storage Power Generation Phase II Project, located in Jintan District, Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province, is a key project in Jiangsu Province. It plans to build two 350MW non-supplementary compressed air energy storage units, which can store energy for 8 hours and generate electricity for 4 hours. The energy conversion efficiency will exceed 70%, and 2.8 million kWh of electricity can be stored on a single charge, which can meet the charging needs of 100,000 new energy vehicles. The project broke through the "neck-stuck" technical barriers, developed and manufactured the world's most advanced air turbine and compressor units, and achieved 100% localization of core equipment. Shandong Electric Power Construction Company No. 1 is responsible for the construction and installation of Unit #2.

Compressed air energy storage is a type of mechanical energy storage. In addition to mechanical energy storage, there are also chemical energy storage, electromagnetic energy storage, and irradiation energy storage. Ceramic Bodies for Energy Storage Fuse is an important accessory in chemical energy storage.

Salt cavern compressed air energy storage is a large-scale new energy storage technology that has developed rapidly in recent years. It is known as the underground "green power bank". When the power station is in low power consumption, it drives the "pump"-like electrical equipment and uses the excess electricity to inject as much air as possible into the idle salt cavern hidden 1,000 meters underground and store it in a high-pressure state. During the peak period of power consumption, the power station releases the compressed air and converts it into electricity through power generation equipment using air expansion to fill the power shortage in time. This also brings huge business opportunities to suppliers of related accessories Photovoltaic Energy Storage Fuse Ceramic Body.

It is reported that the project is currently the world's largest single-unit power, largest total capacity, and highest comprehensive efficiency compressed air energy storage power station. After the project is completed, the annual power generation will reach 924 million kWh, saving more than 270,000 tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 520,000 tons throughout the year. Further fill the gap in the commercial application of large-scale compressed air energy storage in my country, contribute to the energy storage support for the high-quality development of Jiangsu Province's energy industry, help achieve the goal of "carbon peak and carbon neutrality", serve the national energy security strategy, and make positive contributions to promoting my country's energy structure upgrade and sustainable development.
