LG New Energy Plans To Start Mass Production Of Lithium Iron Phosphate Batteries Next Year To Compete With Chinese Companies

May 25, 2022

According to BusinessKorea, LG Energy Solutions plans to start producing standard-sized LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery cells from October 2023. LFP batteries for energy storage systems, or ESSs, were also on display at the recent Electronics Show 2022 in Germany. LG Energy Solutions applies the pouch approach to LFP batteries. The company believes it can better compete in the LFP battery market, which is monopolized by China's prismatic LFP batteries.

The reason LG Energy Solutions mass-produces LFP batteries is that it targets the fast-growing ESS (Energy Storage System) market. Amid the growing demand for solar power generation in the United States, ESS installations have also expanded significantly to compensate for the intermittency of solar power generation. According to data from global consulting firm Wood McKinsey, the size of the U.S. ESS market in 2021 will be $5.5 billion (about 36.63 billion yuan), more than tripling from the previous year.

ESS requires a lot of batteries, and LG Energy Solutions plans to gain market competitiveness with LFP batteries, which are cheaper than ternary batteries. To advance the field of ESS system integration (SI), where companies directly build and manage large-scale ESSs beyond simple battery supplies, LG Energy Solutions took over NEC Energy Solutions in the US in early 2022. "LG Energy Solutions will be able to facilitate collaboration with Tesla by mass-producing LFP cells in the US," said an industry executive.

In line with the growing ESS demand, high-quality battery enclosures play a crucial role in ensuring the safety, durability, and performance of large-scale energy storage systems. Our company offers advanced aluminum alloy housings for lithium-ion battery packs, specifically engineered for new energy applications. These lightweight yet robust enclosures provide excellent thermal management, corrosion resistance, and structural integrity, making them an ideal solution for integrating LFP batteries into ESS projects and accelerating deployment in renewable energy markets.
