INTRODUCTION
--

Welding, or fusion welding, is a technique used in manufacturing to join metals or thermoplastic materials, such as plastics, by applying heat, pressure, or both. Modern welding processes can utilize a variety of energy sources, including gas flames, electric arcs, lasers, electron beams, friction, and ultrasound. CLASSIFICATIONS

1. Arc Welding:

  • Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW): Commonly known as "stick welding," SMAW uses a consumable electrode coated with flux. The electric arc is created between the electrode and the workpiece, melting both and forming a weld pool.
  • Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW): Also known as "MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding," GMAW uses a continuous consumable wire electrode and a shielding gas to protect the weld pool from atmospheric contamination.
  • Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW): Also called "TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding," GTAW uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode and a shielding gas to produce high-quality, precise welds.

2. Resistance Welding:

  • Spot Welding: This technique uses electrodes to apply pressure and electric current to join metal sheets at specific points by melting them together.
  • Seam Welding: Similar to spot welding, the electrodes roll along the joint, creating a continuous weld seam.

3. Gas Welding:

  • Oxy-Fuel Gas Welding (OFW): This involves mixing fuel gas (acetylene) with oxygen to produce a flame that melts the edges of the workpieces, allowing them to fuse together.

4. Solid-State Welding:

  • Friction Welding: Uses friction-generated heat to join materials without melting them. Common types include friction stir welding and rotary friction welding.
  • Ultrasonic Welding: Utilizes high-frequency vibrations to create frictional heat between the materials, forming a solid-state weld.

5. Laser Welding:

  • Uses a high-intensity laser beam to melt and fuse the edges of the workpieces together, resulting in precise and localized welding.

6. Electron Beam Welding (EBW):

  • Involves directing a beam of high-velocity electrons at the joint, which generates heat and causes the materials to melt and weld.

7. Plasma Arc Welding (PAW):

  • Similar to GTAW, but with a more focused arc using a constricted nozzle, allowing for higher welding speeds.

8. Electrogas Welding (EGW):

  • Utilizes a consumable electrode and a shielding gas to weld thick materials in a vertical position.
