$78.2 Million! U.S. Fully Commercialized Battery Energy Storage System Project Receives Debt Financing

Jun 07, 2022

The North American Development Bank (NADB), Siemens' international financing arm, has reportedly signed a $78.2 million loan agreement with energy storage developer EnerSmart Storage to operate a 165MW commercial battery storage facility in California. This financing will support the design, construction, and operation of the project portfolio.

The debt financing, jointly provided by NADB and Siemens Financial Services, will be used to construct energy storage projects at nine sites in San Diego County, with a total capacity of 165MW/330MWh. EnerSmart Storage will act as the project developer, owner, and operator within the service area of local utility San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E).

These energy storage projects will be deployed within SDG&E's service area. Notably, SDG&E deployed a 30MW lithium-ion battery storage system in 2017 to provide regulation capabilities for the local grid.

Industry insiders point out that this deal may be the first debt financing case for a fully commercial battery energy storage system project in the United States, meaning that the energy storage project has not yet signed any long-term resource adequacy agreements with utility companies. The company's press release mentions that these energy storage projects may supply energy to the grid in the future through resource adequacy agreements.

Calixto Mateos Hanel, Managing Director of the North American Development Bank, stated, "As a development bank, we have repeatedly demonstrated in our financing efforts that providing innovative financing for promising green projects is one of our core strengths. This portfolio of energy storage projects demonstrates our continued key role in building sustainable infrastructure while addressing climate change and meeting energy needs in the US-Mexico border region."

This collaboration not only highlights the role of multinational financial institutions in the construction of new energy infrastructure but also demonstrates the significant value of battery energy storage systems in optimizing energy distribution, improving grid flexibility, and addressing climate change. As energy storage technology matures and commercialization progresses, more efficient and safe energy storage solutions will gradually enter the market, bringing profound impacts to the power industry.

In the field of new energy electrical equipment, our company offers a range of products, including copper busbars, flexible busbars, and storage battery packs.
